Feedback that Works

This scenario-based eLearning experience is a concept project focused on helping new managers develop essential feedback skills.

Audience

Recently promoted design team managers

Tools

Storyline 360, Figma, Canva, Mindmeister, Google Suite

Responsibilities

I developed every aspect of the project, from ideation through development. Main responsibilities include instructional design, action mapping, visual and graphic design, and storyboarding.

The Problem

This concept project is for Hitchhyke, a growing ride-sharing company. Their significant expansion over the last two years has brought a wave of new hires, and has meant a promotion for many employees to management positions.

As newer managers, their experience leading teams and working with direct reports is lacking. They don’t know if, when, or how they should give feedback. Productivity and morale have suffered, and the culture is becoming unhealthy.

The Solution

After defining and analyzing the problem, I determined that a combination of solutions would help build successful feedback skills since communication in the workplace is complex. Alongside an immersive eLearning experience, recommended solutions include live workshops, an analysis of communication tools and procedures, and culture coaching at the C-level.

This eLearning solution allows new managers to learn and practice feedback skills in a safe virtual environment, building skill and confidence that will result in higher productivity and morale. I also conceived a separate version geared towards team members themselves to make the feedback loop complete.

My Process

I started strategizing by creating an action map, and determined a variety of solutions to work in tandem. From there I focused on developing the eLearning project, using insights from constructs such as Gagne’s nine events and Meyer’s multimedia principles for optimal learning.

I created storyboard content, visual mockups, and a functional prototype, which were each reviewed, refined, and approved before I produced the final product.

Action Map

For this project, I acted as the SME, drawing from my experience as a business consultant and my education in organizational leadership and communication. The action map includes detailed items that are necessary for performing best feedback practices, and are oriented around a measurable goal of increased productivity. This ensures the resulting project will include relevant, crucial activities for the learner to complete.

Text-based Storyboard

I then used insights from the action map to weave questions, actions, and consequences for the eLearning scenario into a text-based storyboard. To help learners internalize desired behaviors, I included consistent – yet varied – storytelling scenarios that resulted in meaningful rewards and consequences.

I conceived the story’s characters, including a mentor to guide the learner through the scenario. With several rounds of review and approval, I created all text for text boxes, concepts forvisual design, and Storyline programming notes.

Visual Mockups

I then sought to bring the story to life with engaging, balanced visuals that hold the learner’s attention without causing a heavy cognitive load.

Interactive Prototype

Once my mockups were complete, I created a limited interactive prototype in Storyline 360. This included the slides, visuals, and programming of a portion of the total scenario. I received important feedback that helped improve functionality before building out the rest of the project.

Full Development

After applying the feedback I received, I developed the final product. I designed the project for an immersive, intuitive user experience throughout.

The programming includes tasteful animations when transitioning between elements like text boxes, characters, and slides.

I used variables and conditions to guide learners to the proper consequence based on their selection, and created hover states to highlight potential answer choices and the mentor’s avatar.

I designed an added layers with unique animations and slightly varied style to differentiate the mentor advice screens from the rest of the scenario.

"This project is beautifully done! From the start, I was motivated to give 'my team' high-quality feedback and help them flourish! The visual design is so well done. It is very evident that Brandy carefully chose her color palette, font styles, and layout. The consequences are true to life and kept me engaged throughout. There are so many little details that Brandy considered that make this learning experience magnificent!"
